The Basics

What is NSE?

The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) is the country's largest stock exchange, headquartered in Mumbai. Established in 1992 and starting operations in 1994, it was built to bring transparent, fully electronic and nationwide access to India's securities markets.

NSE operates under the oversight of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Its flagship index, the Nifty 50, tracks the 50 largest and most liquid Indian companies and is widely regarded as the benchmark of the Indian equity market. The Bank Nifty index, covering major banks, is one of the most actively traded index-options products in the world.

Beyond shares, NSE offers a full range of derivatives — index and stock futures and options (F&O), currency derivatives and commodity derivatives — giving traders ways to speculate on direction, hedge existing positions and manage risk with leverage.

Contract Specifications

Index F&O lot sizes

One derivatives contract represents a fixed number of index units — the lot size. Futures and options on the same index share the same lot size.

Lot sizes are set by the exchange to keep each contract's value within SEBI's prescribed band, and are revised periodically — the figures above reflect the January 2026 series. Always confirm the current lot size before you trade.

When It's Open

NSE trading hours

The equity and derivatives day runs Monday to Friday in three parts.

Pre-Open
9:00 – 9:15 AM

Orders are collected and a fair opening price is discovered before continuous trading begins.

Normal Market
9:15 AM – 3:30 PM

Continuous trading for equities. Equity derivatives (F&O) run until 3:40 PM under the 2026 framework.

Closing / Post
3:30 – 4:00 PM

A closing-auction and post-close window that sets and confirms the day's official closing prices.

All times are IST, Monday to Friday. NSE is closed on weekends and declared exchange holidays, and holds a special Muhurat trading session on Diwali each year. Currency and commodity segments run their own extended hours.

Questions

NSE FAQ

What are NSE trading hours? +
The equity market runs a pre-open from 9:00–9:15 AM and continuous trading from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST, Monday to Friday. Under the 2026 framework, equity derivatives (F&O) trade until 3:40 PM. NSE is closed on weekends and declared holidays.
What is the lot size of Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty? +
From the January 2026 series, the Nifty 50 lot size is 65 units and Bank Nifty is 30 units. Futures and options on the same index share the same lot size. The exchange revises these periodically to keep contract values within SEBI's prescribed range.
What's the difference between the cash and F&O segments? +
In the cash (equity) segment you buy and own shares outright. In the F&O (derivatives) segment you trade futures and options contracts on margin — you don't own the underlying, and you can go long or short with leverage, which increases both potential return and risk.
Is NSE regulated? +
Yes. NSE operates under the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), which regulates the exchange, its members and the products traded on it.
What is the Nifty 50? +
The Nifty 50 is NSE's flagship index, tracking the 50 largest and most liquid companies listed on the exchange. It's the most widely followed benchmark of the Indian equity market and the underlying for hugely popular index futures and options.

Contract specifications, lot sizes and trading hours are set by the exchange and revised from time to time — always confirm the latest details from official NSE circulars before trading. Trading in equities and especially in leveraged derivatives (futures and options) carries a high level of risk and can result in the loss of your entire capital.
