The Basics

What is MCX?

The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) is the country's largest commodity derivatives exchange. Founded in November 2003 and headquartered in Mumbai, it lets traders buy and sell futures and options contracts on physical commodities — without ever handling the underlying goods.

MCX has been regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) since September 2015, bringing commodity derivatives under the same regulatory umbrella as equities. Today it hosts more than 50 commodities across bullion, energy, base metals and agriculture.

What makes MCX distinctive is its extended evening session. Global commodity benchmarks — gold and silver on COMEX, crude oil on NYMEX, copper and zinc on the LME — keep moving during US and European hours, which fall in the Indian evening. MCX stays open until 11:30 PM IST so Indian traders can respond to that price discovery as it happens, rather than waiting for the next morning.

What You Can Trade

Four core segments cover the commodities that matter most to Indian traders.

Contract Specifications

Lot sizes & key specs

The exchange sets a fixed lot size, tick size and expiry for every contract. Here are the most actively traded ones.

CommodityLot SizePrice QuoteTick SizeSettlement
Gold GOLD1 kg₹ per 10 g₹1Physical
Gold Mini GOLDM100 g₹ per 10 g₹1Physical
Silver SILVER30 kg₹ per kg₹1Physical
Silver Micro SILVERM5 kg₹ per kg₹1Physical
Crude Oil CRUDEOIL100 barrels₹ per barrel₹1Cash (NYMEX WTI)

Natural Gas NATURALGAS1,250 mmBtu₹ per mmBtu₹0.10Cash (Henry Hub)
Copper COPPER2.5 MT₹ per kg₹0.05Cash (LME)

You trade on margin — typically around 9–15% of the full contract value — not the whole amount upfront. Mini and Micro contracts control a smaller quantity, so they need proportionally less capital and suit newer traders.

When It's Open

MCX trading hours

MCX runs Monday to Friday in two sessions — and, unlike the stock market, it does not close at 5 PM.

Morning Session
9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

The main daytime window for metals and energy. A pre-open order-modification session runs from 8:45–8:59 AM.

Evening Session
5:00 PM – 11:30 PM

The globally-linked window. Extends to 11:55 PM during US daylight-saving months, when crude oil and bullion are most active.

All times are IST, Monday to Friday. MCX is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and declared exchange holidays. Evening timings shift twice a year to track US daylight-saving changes.

Why It Matters

Why traders choose MCX

Extended Hours

A near-15-hour trading day lets you act on US and European commodity moves the same evening they happen.

Deep Liquidity

Gold, silver and crude oil are among the most heavily traded contracts in India — tight spreads, easy entry and exit.

SEBI Regulated

Commodity derivatives on MCX fall under SEBI oversight, the same regulator that governs India's equity markets.

Small & Large Lots

Mini and micro contracts mean you can start with modest capital, then scale into standard lots as you grow.

Leverage on Margin

Post a fraction of contract value as margin to control a full position — amplifying both gains and risk.

Global Price Discovery

MCX prices track international benchmarks (COMEX, NYMEX, LME), giving direct exposure to world commodity trends.

Questions

MCX FAQ

What are MCX trading hours? +
MCX trades from 9:00 AM to 11:30 PM IST, Monday to Friday, split into a morning session (9:00 AM–5:00 PM) and an evening session (5:00 PM–11:30 PM). During US daylight-saving months the evening session extends to 11:55 PM. MCX is closed on weekends and declared holidays.
What is the lot size of MCX Gold and Crude Oil? +
The standard Gold contract has a lot size of 1 kg (quoted per 10 grams), and Gold Mini is 100 grams. Standard Crude Oil is 100 barrels, while Crude Oil Mini is 10 barrels — a tenth of the size, better suited to beginners.
Is MCX regulated? +
Yes. MCX has been regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) since September 2015, the same body that oversees India's equity and derivatives markets.
Do I need to take delivery of the physical commodity? +
Not usually. Many contracts — such as crude oil, natural gas and base metals — are cash-settled against an international benchmark, so no physical goods change hands. Bullion contracts can be physically settled, but most traders exit or roll their position before expiry.
Is MCX open on Saturday and Sunday? +
No. MCX is closed on all Saturdays and Sundays, and on exchange-declared trading holidays. It does hold a special Muhurat trading session on Diwali each year.
